Audi Wins Daytona 24 Hour!

Don’t worry, you didn’t miss Audi winning the iconic 24 Hours of Daytona sports car race, AKA. the WeatherTech Sportscar Championship. That’s coming up the end of January. What Audi did win was the Historic Sportscar Racing’s Classic 24 Hour event at Daytona International Speedway this past weekend. This is the second year of this event and it’s a unique opportunity to see some of the old race machinery from days gone bye. Prototype and GT race cars from the early 60’s to the early 2000’s participated in REAL racing on Daytona’s famous 3.65 mile road course. How do cars from the 1960’s compete with modern era racing machines? Here’s what they do.

All the cars are placed into groups based on their age so that each group represents the vintage of machinery you would have seen on the track in that time period. At Daytona there were six groups, A through F. Each group races for about 45 minutes and then relinquishes the track to the next group, allowing 15 minutes between races to clear the track. Once all six groups have been on the track the sequence starts all over again with Group A. This continues for 24 hours and the winners are determined by the total number of laps completed and total time required to complete those laps. This year the overall winner was the number 38 car, a 2005 Audi R8 prototype, which completed 87 laps in 2 hours 49 minutes and 21.552 seconds. Second place was a 2007 Pescarolo 01 LeMans prototype and third was a 1998 Riley & Scott Mk III B prototype. All three cars completed 87 laps. The difference between first and third was just 2 minutes and 9 seconds! The number 2 Audi R8 prototype finished 7th overall. And for you R8 owners (or, as in my case, wanna be owner) the 2009 Audi R8 LMS of Mike Skeen and David Roberts finished fifth among all GT cars, only surpassed by two newer model Porsche 911s (997), a 1997 Corvette and a 2004 Porsche RSR.

The Jacksonville region of ACFL was represented at the event with two members, yours truly and Paul Caron. For the next HSR Classic 24 we hope to have a larger contingent of Jacksonville region members. The trick is, next year the Classic 24 begins alternating between the LeMans circuit in Sarthe, France and Daytona. So that during the odd numbered years the race is held at Daytona and the even numbered years at LeMans. So mark your calendar for November 2017 and we’ll see you the next time Audi wins overall at the Daytona 24 Hours.

Audi at the 2016 International Consumer Electronics Show

Audi is once again represented at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Nevada, which is being held from January 6 to 8, 2016. The brand is presenting its latest technologies and models for the sixth time – in an exhibit space that is immersed in light. This year too, the press conference on the first day of the show will be followed by the Audi Tech Talk, at which technology experts will be available to answer questions.

At the press conference, which will be held in the North Hall on January 6, 2016, Audi will be offering insights into the latest developments from its technology world. At 11 a.m., Ricky Hudi, Head of Electrics/Electronics Development, and Scott Keogh, President of Audi of America, will present the latest technologies, products and megatrends in the areas of electrification, digitalization and piloted driving. With a concept car and numerous technology exhibits, Audi is offering an outlook on the automotive future, which will be influenced more than ever by the electronics field.

If you have a special Audi such as one of the S or RS models or a pre 2000 that you would like to sell, we will list it once in the newsletter. I will need the year, model, color over interior color, and your email address. Longer and non-member postings can be placed in the website. We will also list DKW, NSU, and Wanderer motorcycles. If you are looking for a particular car, once again S, RS or pre 2000 model plus a bike, we will also try to accommodate you here.

For Example: Wanted: Wanderer or DKW motorcycle of motorbike pre 1950 walter@audiclubfl.org

Final Words..

Welcome to our new ACNA members. Our membership numbers continue to grow; we are now well over 375 members, which mean additional critical mass in different regions of the state and hopefully more events and greater participation. If you have not had a chance yet check out both the ACNA website, and the Audi Club of Florida website. There is a great deal of good information plus some excellent photos of member’s cars.
