A few final words.......
January was not the best sales wise, but still a good month for Audi up 2.7% coming off a very strong December and the 61st consecutive month of year to year monthly sales gains. Some months clearly better than others but certainly respectable. What I am unable to understand is while Audi increased sales the other boys from Bavaria seemed to have slipped on some ice perhaps and unfortunately must have hit their heads, According to Ludwig Willisch, President and CEO, BMW of North America who I am sure would be a great guy to sit down and have a warm Leberkäse sandwich and beer with to discuss cars, he is after all a car guy, BMW sales for "January suffered a bit from the strong storms that froze large parts of the country," Now I have been told we are under a global warming alert, rising sea predictions and all sorts of other horrible man made disasters looming in the future. I did not know that the weather was now also significantly different at BMW dealerships compared to Audi dealerships, which would lead to the basis for his explanation for the fall off in sales. The only real explanation I can come up with is an old retail cloths dictum "one does not sell bikinis in Montreal in January" or as it relates to cars, trying to sell predominantly rear wheel drive cars with summer performance tires in the middle of winter. Clearly a question of product offering and mix. BTW the Germans are smart (sometimes), new cars cannot be delivered with summer high performance tires during the winter months. One can only hope the boys in Herndon never come up with the same reason to explain a poor sales performance.
As a final note, according to a Bloomberg article of Feb 10, date lined Munich, BMW has fallen to third place in the world wide sales competition for the three top German brands' January reporting. BMW had been overtaken by Audi. Clearly the Abgas-Affair has not diminished the world wide demand for the brand vise-a-vie BMW.
Welcome to our new ACNA and ACFL members and we look forward to having you join us at some of the above events.
